New York Fashion Week – Marchesa Fall 2012

After an amazing and exciting seven days, New York Fashion Week closed its doors in style on Thursday, leaving us filled with new wishes, more ideas, some plans, and a couple of dreams, all for the coming Fall, and to think it’s not even Spring yet.

I couldn’t find the right amount of time to check ALL the collections presented during this week, but luckily, I did manage to explore, what some of my favorite designers envisioned for the upcoming cold seasons. Giving it the fact that I’m way behind with everything that I’d like to share with you, I’m going to get straight to the point.

For Fall 2012, Marchesa found its inspiration in William-Adolphe Bouguereau’s dramatic 1878 painting, entitled A Soul Brought to Heaven, in which “the body of a young woman is being carefully carried to the gates of heaven, through a stormy sky.” With such divine inspiration, it’s no wonder the collection itself looked ethereal, vivid, and above all, poetic.

What I loved most about the collection, well, can I make it short and say … just about everything? No, that I can’t do, so … I loved the sequence of dramatic Oscar worthy gowns; the splendid embroidered silhouettes; the fantastic scenery as the models walk down the runway, strongly resembled them floating above the clouds; the full-on glamour accessories and the subtle sexiness of the sheer garments.

In terms of trends, Georgina Chapman and Keren Craig focused on feathers, lace embroidery, gold accents and precious metals detailing for this Fall.

My favorite looks of the collection were almost all of the short cocktail dresses (hint the first two above), but what stood out most, was the dramatic closing piece, a red gown made of a fully embroidered bodice, paired with a huge floor-length puffy skirt. What, can’t a girl love her share of princess worthy ball gowns? I hope someone will do justice to this dress, and rather sooner then later. Maybe at the Oscars?

As far as colors go, Marchesa suggested red, black, powdery blue, gold and ivory for Fall, whilst for accessories, nothing beats the luxurious box clutches with pearls, precious stones and feather appliques, the nineteen century inspired pointy-toe heels, or the glamorous version of the gladiator sandals. Models sported soft touches of make-up and romantically braided updos.
